Proscovia’s Story
Proscovia is a 55-year-old stay-at-home mother from Kampala, Uganda. She used to work but had to stop due to illness. Her transactions have always primarily been cash-based and she participates in an informal Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) to save and borrow money when needed.
Proscovia does not engage with Digital Financial Services (DFS) as she only has a basic phone which she used to use to receive calls from clients when she worked.
While she has the required documentation to register for DFS services and was interested in obtaining DFS, she gave up on the process as she finds it difficult to navigate smart phones. Even essential tasks like loading airtime and saving contacts is difficult for Proscovia due to her inability to read or write.
"I used to have a basic phone that my clients would use to reach me for services. However, I found it difficult to navigate functions like loading airtime or saving contacts. Since I couldn’t read English, I gave up on using the phone. Now, I can’t access any DFS services, even though I have the right documents to register." - Proscovia
