Maya’s Story
Maya is a 19-year-old who recently completed high school and is preparing for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for Cardiology. She has actively uses digital payment platforms like PhonePe, Google Pay, and PayTM.
When she first began, Maya had to install Phone Pe secretly as her family was worried about the potential risks with DFS. She began using it by syncing all her contacts with Phone Pe and then sent one rupee as a test transaction to everyone on the list. They all in turn, responded by sending her one rupee back - this was how she realised the app worked as intended.
Maya didn’t fully grasp how to navigate the app at first but learned by experimenting. She later introduced her mother to digital payments, explaining how to set up a PayTM account for her soda business. After creating the account and linking her mother's bank, she walked her through the process, pointing out key features such as the contacts icon for sending money and the history icon for tracking transactions. Maya even created the UPI ID and MPIN herself, guiding her mother through how to manage payments step by step highlighting specific symbols to help her mom build a visual recognition of the process.
She made sure her mother understood the importance of testing small amounts first and verifying with the recipient before making larger transactions, a method she’d learned through her own experience.
“If you want to send money to a specific someone, you type Yashoda mobile number, type, see the name, send one rupees and call and tell them. Ask to check, if they say it is correct then you can send the pick amount even 50,000 or 90,000.” - Maya
