Kayaga’s Story
Kayaga is a 27 year old, small scale tailor and boutique operator who lives by herself in Kampala, Uganda. She uses DFS in her business and send and receive money from her family who live in village in Uganda.
However, Kayaga faced a setback when her phone was stolen, barring her DFS access. She had taken a microcredit loan via DFS, but without her phone, she couldn’t manage her account. To regain access, she had to retrieve her National ID from her village, a process that delayed her registration for a new SIM card and transfer of ownership of her DFS account. By the time she resolved the issue, the interest on her loan had accumulated to an amount far exceeding her initial loan.
Frustrated by this, Kayaga opted to apply for a new SIM card under her friend's name and continued using DFS through their number, feeling that the company had treated her unfairly with the mounting charges.
